He was born in Overton on Nov. 16, 1921, to the late Walter Smith and Meda (Booth) Smith. Paul served his country proudly in the United States Army during World War II. He spent most of his life as a long-haul truck driver and prior to moving to Lawtey 32 years ago, he was the town marshall in Burbank. Paul was a loving and dedicated husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great grandfather who will be missed greatly.
He is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Margaret Madeline Smith of Lawtey, Fla.; his children, Walter Edward (Bernice) Smith of West Salem, Elizabeth "Libby" Bard of Creston, Carolyn S. (Leslie) Shadd of Brooker, Fla.; his 19 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sons, George Frederick Smith and Charles Douglas Smith; his brothers, Milo and Ross Smith; and his sister, Doris Butler.
Funeral services were held on Monday, June 4, 2012, at Archie Tanner Funeral Services, with Pastor Lester Austin officiating. Interment will be at Jacksonville National Cemetery at a later date.
