A Captain in the US Navy, Dr. Alford helped establish the first American hospital, Bad Kreuznach in occupied Germany.
Dr. Alford had graduated from Johns Hopkins University and went on to do a surgical oncology fellowship at Sloane Kettering Memorial Hospital in New York City. Later, he became one of the first head and neck oncology surgeons in the Washington, DC area.
A professor of surgery at George Washington University Medical Center, he also did research at the National Institutes of Health in the field of cancer. He made many contributions on the genetic potential for the identification and treatment of cancers.
