Merriam Margaret (Oknefski) Mercer was the daughter of John Christian and Emma Jane (Gardner) Oknefski. She was the 1st wife of Richard Claire Mercer, Sr. Richard died August 16, 2001. Merriam was the beloved mother of Muriel "Jerre" (Mercer) Eckert, Richard C., Rodger A., William D., Frederick and John C. Mercer. At the time of her death Merriam lived at 116 N. Broad Street. She died of cerebral hemorrhage/malignant hypertension/rheumatic heart disease. Her death certificate was signed by Dr. W. W. Thompson.

MERCER.--Mrs. Richard Mercer, Sr., age 44, of 116 North Broad St., died in the Elk County General Hospital Thursday evening at 7:35 p.m. (est). She was born in Ridgway December 16, 1915, and lived her entire life in this community. She was a member of the English Lutheran Church and was predeceased by a daughter in 1940. Survivors include her husband, Richard Mercer, Sr., her parents, John and Emma Gardner Oknefski of Ridgway; her mother-in-law, Mrs. Mary Mercer, of Cleveland, Ohio; the following children: Mrs. Allen Eckert (Muriel), Richard C., Roger A., William D., Frederick, and John C., all of Ridgway; a sister, Mrs. Lee Nearing (Grace), of Ridgway; and eight grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Lehman-Hammond Funeral Home, the Rev. William Gordon Joyce, pastor of the First Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Pine Grove Cemetery.

A funeral service was held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Lehman-Hammond funeral Home for Mrs. Richard Mercer, Sr., age 44, of 116 North Broad Street, and native of Ridgway, who died Tuesday evening in the Elk County General Hospital. Rev. William Gordon Joyce, pastor of the First Lutheran church, officiated. Interment was in Pine Grove Cemetery, where Rev. Joyce conducted the committal service. Pallbearers were cousins of the deceased: Carl and Earl Nelson, Kenneth Oknefski and Lee Oknefski, Ridgway; Robert Nearing, Highland, and Keith Gardner, Johnsonburg. Relatives and friends from out of town attending the funeral were: Harold Mercer, Chambersburg; Mrs. Mary Mercer and Mrs. Nellie Hooper, Cleveland' Mr. and Mrs. John Sennett, Eldred; Mr. and Mrs. George Nelson, New Kensington; Mr. and Mrs. James Brinkley, Kane; Mr. and Mrs. Leland Wilson, DeYoung; Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Lundin, Shelvey Summit; Mr. and Mrs. Ray Eckert, St. Marys; Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Sennett and family, Clearfield; Mr. and Mrs. Thomas DeHass, St. Marys; Mrs. Elmer Grandlin and Mr. and Mrs. Russell Weber, Johnsonburg.

We wish to thank our kind friends, neighbors, pallbearers, those who kindly furnished cars, for the many acts of kindness, expressions of sympathy and condolence, and for their beautiful floral offerings at the loss of our dearly beloved wife, mother, daughter and sister.
