Betsy Hayter Brogan was a casualty of the US Air 5050 crash at LaGuardia Airport on 20 Sept 1989. The 737 collided with approach lighting stanchions as it went off the end of the runway during an attempted aborted takeoff after direction control issues.

Betsy, 37, was a nursing supervisor at Johnson City Medical Center from Gray, TN, and was traveling with her mother-in-law, Ayles Brogan [#90513884] of Virginia. Both were the only fatalities the 57 passengers onboard. Betsy was returning home from an annual nurses conference that was held in NYC. Her mother-in-law had accompanied her on the trip so they could do some shopping together in Manhattan.

She was the wife of USAir employee James G. Brogan and they had a 5-year-old son.

In 1991, her husband established a nursing scholarship endowment at East Tennessee State University College of Nursing in memory of his wife, a 1971 graduate.
