Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served in the Civil War first in the 2nd Rhode Island Volunteer Infantry, rising to Lieutenant Colonel of the regiment. When units consisting of African-American men were authorized by the United States Government, he offered to serve in one, and became first Colonel and commander of the 22nd United States Colored Troops, then Colonel and commander of the 37th United States Colored Troops. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "long and faithful services and gallant conduct in the field".
