OBITUARY :
E. WARD EMERY, 98, passed away peacefully Saturday, June 16, 2012, at the Colestock Health Center, Quincy Village, Pennsylvania.
Born in Wetmore, Kansas on January 15, 1914, he was the son of Edward Henry Herbert Emery, who died before Ward's birth, and Lucy (Ward) Emery, who raised him and his two sisters alone.
He graduated from Baldwin City High School, Kansas in 1930 before attending Baker University (Baldwin City, KS) where he received a BS in 1933. He went on to study at the University of Kansas getting an MS in 1934. In 1935-36, he was a graduate student in mathematics at Princeton University, where John von Neumann, one of the initial members of the Institute for Advanced Study, was a professor.
He worked for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co in New York City for his entire career, from 1936-1976, except during WWII when he was on a leave of absence working for the War Department with Columbia University. While on war assignment he was working in the Empire State Building on Saturday, July 28, 1945, at 9:45 AM when a U.S. Army B-25 bomber hit the building killing 14 and injuring 26, a story he retold after the 9/11 attack. He started his career as an actuary becoming an Associate of the Society of Actuaries. In this role he utilized computers and in the late 1950s he moved into data processing where he was involved with some of the very earliest business applications of the new machines. He served as a Trustee of the Parsippany (NJ) Public Library System from 1976-1988.
He was a life-long member of the United Methodist Church serving as the treasurer of two local N.J. churches, in Lyndhurst and Boonton, and on the Board of Pensions for the Northern New Jersey Conference. He and his wife Edna attended World Methodist Conferences in Honolulu, Nairobi and Singapore. They became active members of the Quincy United Methodist Church when they moved to the Quincy Village in 1994.
He was an avid reader and remained active by bowling and participating in many of the activities at the Quincy Village until an illness required nursing care in October 2010.
He is survived by daughters Marian Ward (Clark Morris), Bridgetown, Nova Scotia, and Virginia Moore, St. Clairsville, Ohio; sons Stephen Emery, Chambersburg, PA, and Douglas Emery (Cynthia Cordes), Miami, Florida; grandsons Benjamin, Ryan, and Logan; granddaughters Lucy and Lacey; great granddaughters Allegra and Aria; niece Susan Roll (John Roll); nephew Edward Grotefend.
He was predeceased by his wife Edna Goddard Emery; sisters Mary Grotefend and Alice Dangerfield; granddaughter Isabelle Ward; and son-in-law Benjamin Ward.
A memorial service will be held Sunday June 24th at 1:30pm in the Bryson Room at Quincy Village, Colestock Health Center, 6596 Orphanage Rd., Waynesboro, PA .
Interment will be at the Boonton (NJ) United Methodist Church Memorial Garden.
