Mary Morris Clarke was one of two daughters of Sen. Richard Clarke and Helen Gaines (Foote) Clarke of Alabama. A Mobile debutant, in 1905, she was the Queen of the Mobile Mardi Gras Celebrations. On April 3, 1907, she married Carl Herndon Seals. They divorced before 1924. She did not remarry. Instead, she obtained a degree in English from Columbia University, NYC. She then taught English and Speech at Barnard College, NYC, until her retirement in the 1950s. She loved to travel, traveling to Europe at least five times during the late 1920's and early 1930's.
