He employed hundreds of men in an espionage school he founded and funded, and was regarded as responsible for cracking the Nazi German "Intrepid" code (which gave him the code name "Intrepid"). His schools trained 5 future directors of the United States Central Intelligence Agency. He lived a life of seclusion because of his involvement in numerous convert and espionage events during the 20th century. Operatives had given him code names and numbers for his own protection, and he kept his real name, photo, whereabouts, all secret. Hunted and hated by the Nazi intelligence during World War II; German dictator Adolph Hitler himself had put a reward on his head. He lived hidden until the day of his death in 1989, it is rumored that even his grave-site is booby trapped. His honors include the "Military Cross" and the "Distinguished Flying Cross", a knighthood by the British crown, the "Medal of Merit" (highest United States civil honor at the time) awarded by President Harry S.
