"John P. Doane was born in Cohasset, Mass., Aug. 21, 1859, and died at the home of his step-daughter, Mrs. F. J. Clark, at Gloversville, N. Y., May 1, 1912, after an illness of seven weeks. Death was caused by heart failure. Mr. Doane was in 1910 the manager of the Middleville branch of the Globe Knitting Mills, and during his stay in this village made a host of warm friends, who sincerely regret his demise. The greater part of his life was spent at Cooperstown, N. Y., and the Otsego Farmer, a newspaper published in that place, says: 'For some time he represented the town of Middlefield as supervisor. He was also one of the directors of the Cooperstown National bank. Mr. Doane was a gentleman and a citizen in the highest sense. Always a leader in any good and progressive work, he stamped the impress of his character upon this community, and made a place for himself in the esteem and affection of all who knew him.' The same was true in Middleville. All who met and knew Mr. Doane were his friends. The funeral services were held at Gloversville, May 3." ["The Middleville Sun" (Middleville, MI), May 23, 1912, p. 1]
