Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. An 1855 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, he was served as a 1st Lieutenant in the 1st United States Regular Artillery when the Civil War began. He was advanced to the rank of Major, and assigned as an Additional Aide-de-Camp on the staff of Major General Irwin McDowell. Later in the war he was transferred to the Adjutant General Department in Washington, DC, where he served as an Acting Assistant Adjutant General. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army on March 13, 1865 for "diligent, faithful and meritorious services during the war". He would on on to serve until he retired in 1898, serving the last year as Brigadier General, and Adjutant General of the Army.
