William Edward Kelley was born in 1826 in Washington County, KY. William served in the Mexican War and the Civil War. He was only one of two officers of the 10th Kentucky that served in the Mexican War. He organized a company prior to the war as part of the Home Guards. He was a private in the 4th Kentucky Volunteers. He became 1st Lieutenant in Company I of the 10th Kentucky. Prior to the war William was a Wheelwright.

On July 6, 1854 he married Elizabeth Chase (it is my belief this was her second marriage. I believe she married an A. S. Purdy in 1851). In 1862 he contracted a prolonged illness in Tennesse. He was called to testify for the prosecution in a court martial trial.

William was shot in the hip, taken to a house for care and later captured by the Confederates during the battle of Chickamauga. He was listed as seriously wounded and moved to Louisville. Spent time a Camp Chase, Ohio and returned to the regiment on September, 1864. After being paroled he was severely wounded again this time in the head while gallantly leading their companies in Jonesborough, Georgia.

His wife Elizabeth passed away in 1868 on their homestead. He remarried to Arthusia Overall in 1869. He had a total of 7 children. Two with Elizabeth and 5 with Arthusia.

At some point the 'e' in the Kelley was removed and the names became Kelly.
