Former Auxiliary for the Diocese of Augsburg and Bishop of the Titular See of Dionysiana, Monsignor Rudolf Schmid was born to German parents in Schiers, Switzerland, on June 26, 1914. His father was a craftsman and returned with his family to Augsburg in 1915. He finished high school in 1933, at the St. Stephan Gymnasium, followed by matriculation at the Universities of Augsburg and TΓΌbingen, where he studied philosophy between 1934 and 1938. After concluding his studies in theology at the Seminary of Dillingen, he was ordained to the priesthood on June 26, 1938, his 24th birthday. Serving in the Army, between 1939 and 1945, he fell under US captivity before being released at the end of the Second World War.

In 1949, Schmid joined the staff of the Minor Seminary of Dillingen, first as religion teacher, becoming later prefect and its head in 1963. Appointed canon of the Reverend Chapter of the Cathedral of Augsburg in 1966, Schmid was named Auxiliary for the named See by Pope Paul VI on January 3, 1972, receiving his episcopal consecration on the following March 25, from Bishop Josef Stimpfle, assisted by Bishops Antonius Hofmann, Rudolf Graber, Platon Volodyslav Kornyljak and Antanas Louis Deksnys.

As episcopal vicar, he was responsible almost twenty years for the Charity and Social Affairs of the Diocese of Augsburg. Retiring from office at 76 years of age on July 11, 1990, Schmid continuing serving as Chairman of the Caritas Association and of the Catholic Child Welfare of the Diocese until 1994.

Visits to the disabled, the sick and the elderly were at Bishop Schmid's heart. And thanks to his good memory, he remembered everyone he met. For more than 60 years, his sister Clotilde stood aside as his housekeeper. She died three months before him.

Monsignor Schmid passed away in Augsburg in the early hours of Sunday, June 24, 2012, two days short of his 98th birthday. Requiem Mass was celebrated at the Cathedral of Augsburg on Saturday, June 30, at 14 hrs., followed by interment in the Weihbischofsgruft of the named cathedral.
