Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. A 1819 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, he had a long career as an engineer in the United States Army. He served as superintendent of the USMA from 1845 to 1852, and was a Colonel in the Corps of Engineers at the outbreak of the Civil War. Too old for field command, he served as Superintending Engineer of the defenses of Baltimore, Maryland, a city critical to the Union war effort. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army on March 13, 1865 for "long, faithful and meritorious services".
