I was in the flight of 4 when Bob and Ted Shorack lost their lives over North Vietnam. Bob had just returned from R&R and I believe it was his first flight.

The 602nd Fighter Squadron (Commando) flew the A-1 SKYRAIDER throughout the Vietnam war, from Bien Hoa and Pleiku in South Vietnam and from Udorn and Nakon Phanom in Thailand. During this time the 602nd's name changed to 602nd Special Operations Squadron - but their call sign SANDY remained the same throughout. SANDY was the call sign used while conducting Search and Rescue operations.
Major Theodore J Shorack and Captain Robert Ira Bush, both of the 602nd Fighter Squadron, were lost on 09 Jun 1966 when their A-1s went down over North Vietnam. As of 29 May 2005 their remains have not been repatriated.

***** Robert Ira Bush is my Uncle. He loved his country more than anyone will ever know and loved his plane. He once told me that when he dies, it will be in his plane fighting for us and he did, he died fighting for what he believed in. I have so many memories of him landing at Oxnard Air Force Base and I can still see him getting out of that plane in his flight suit, so strong and such a handsome man. He truly is a HERO and I will never forget him. God Bless you, Uncle Rob Love, Jeanette Williams

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A Racine, Wis., jet pilot decorated for heroism has been killed in Viet Nam in a midair collision on his 28th birthday anniversary.

The Defense Department announced Friday that Capt. Robert I. Bush had died in combat.

Bush’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. George I. Bush, were told their son was killed when two planes collided after their last pass over a bombing target.

The flier, who was decorated for heroism in 1963 for remaining at the controls of a burning plane, had been shot down on another mission only two weeks ago.

Bush was flying a jet used for bombing and ground support when it crashed Wednesday.

He had completed more than 140 missions in Viet Nam. Last month he hid from the Viet Cong for two hours, after parachuting from his disabled aircraft, until he was rescued by a helicopter.

He had been in Viet Nam since last November. Bush was a 10-year veteran of the Air Force and had been an officer since 1960.

He received the Distinguished Flying Cross in September, 1963 at Hollman Air Force Base in New Mexico after he stayed in the flaming cockpit of an F101 jet fighter until he was certain his radar observer had been able to parachute to safety. The fighter had caught fire when an air-to-air rocket being tested exploded on release.
