Brother of Major General John Schofield. Born in Chautauqua, New York, James came to St. Louis before the Civil War, just after his graduation from the Rochester Theological Seminary in central New York. He took charge of the Third Baptist Church, then a weak organization, and built for it the foundations on which it later stood as one of the largest and wealthiest churches in the country. Afterward, he went to the Fourth Baptist Church in North St. Louis where he remained for several years until he was made assistant pastor to Dr. W. W. Boyd of the Second Baptist Church in 1886.
