By the first of October the 45th Infantry Division was up against a strong enemy line extending from the Bru south to Grandvillers . The enemy was well dug in and appeared to be reinforcing his positions. Our rate of advance was slowed because of the lack of local numerical superiority and due to the fact that our men were worn down by continued usage; and thirdly, because of German stubborness."
