Born Nov. 13, 1915, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Herbert and Myrtle Propst Spencer.
A member of St. Stephens Lutheran Church Mo.-Synod, he retired as a truck driver, farmer and builder.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Huffman Spencer; a daughter, Brenda Starnes; a sister, Macie Norris; two brothers, H.L. Spencer Jr. and Adolphus Spencer; and two grandchildren, Christopher Dale Starnes and Crystal Dawn Starnes.
Survivors include a daughter, Frances S. Reese of Conover; three sons, James T. Spencer and Wilburn L. Spencer of Conover and C. Tommy Spencer of the home; four sisters, Emily Christenbury and Fleta Bolick of Conover, Wilma Kersey of High Point and Margery Cline of Taylorsville; a brother, Rayford Spencer of Conover; a son-in-law, Roger Starnes of Conover; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. today, Thursday, at St. Stephens Lutheran Church Mo.-Synod with Pastor David Guelzow officiating.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons.
The family will receive friends at the church following the memorial service.
