Hall of Fame Professional Boxer. He held the "Duration" Heavyweight Champion Title while Joe Louis served with the US Army during World War II. After relocating to Cleveland, Ohio, he turned professional at the age of nineteen and wasted no time rising among the ranks in the Heavyweight Division, as he won his first nineteen bouts. In 1942, he defeated Tami Mauriello for the "Duration" Heavyweight Title which was up for grabs as champion Joe Louis temporary relinquished his belt to serve with the Army. By the end of 1942, he was ranked by The Ring as the number one contender in both the Heavyweight and Light-Heavyweight Divisions. Bivins himself served with the Army during World War II. Bivins may perhaps be best remembered for a contest in which he floored Archie Moore several times on his way to a 6th round knockout victory. During the course of his career, he earned bouts against a bevy of champions including Ezzard Charles, Joey Maxim, Harold Johnson and Joe Louis, in addition to Moore. He retired in 1955, after compiling a 86 win (31 knockout) 25 loss and 1 draw record. After his boxing career, he worked as a delivery truck driver. He was enshrined into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1999.
