Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He began his Civil War service as a 1st Sergeant in Company E (the "Logan Guards") of the 25th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, a three-months enlistment unit raised at the outset of the war. He served until the regiment was mustered out of service in July 1861, and received a commission of Major in the newly raised 46th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. From there he was promoted to Colonel, and led first the 128th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, then the 205th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on April 2, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services at Forts Stedman and Sedgwick, Va".
