United States Naval Officer. He served as the acting captain of the frigate "Constitution" in 1804 during the war with Tripoli. He was also senior officer in charge of naval affairs at Charleston during the War of 1812.

Here rests the remains of Capt. John Herbert Dent of the U. S. Navy,
A Native of Maryland who was born on the 22 day of February, 1782,
And died on the 29 of July, 1823, at his plantation at St. Bartholomew's Parish,
Greatly loved and lamented by his family.
