Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served during the Civil War first as a Captain in the 1st Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, then as Colonel and commander of the 35th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on April 2, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services in the front of Petersburg, Va".
