C.E. Bray, 64, Retired School Principal, Dies
VALDERS—C. E. Bary, 64, a retired principal of Valders High School, former teacher and Navy veteran of World War I died early Thursday morning at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc, where he had been a patient one day. He had been in ill health several months.
Having served the Valders Community school system as its head for 37 years, he announced his resignation due to ill health in April, effective June 30. On the heels of his announcement of retiring came 72 letters of appreciation from teachers and basketball captains—compiled in a book and presented to him in May by a committee headed by Leonard Turnell, an agriculture instructor at Valders High.
Chicago Native
Mr. Bray was a native of Chicago, where he was born Sept. 11, 1896, the son of the late John W. and Florence Drury Bray. He moved with his family to Cobb, Iowa County, as a youngster and completed his elementary and secondary education there.
After completing a three-years course at Platteville State College, he taught science and coached for a year at Spooner and then Joined the U.S. Navy during World War I. While with the Navy he attended Officers Material School at Bremerton, Wash., a branch of Washington State University.
He returned to teaching after the war, moving to Dodgeville in Iowa County, where he taught science and agriculture and coached all sports. He married Mary Brennan Sept. 2, 1920, at Duluth and they moved a short time later to Spooner, where he again taught science and coached sports.
With three teaching years at Spooner behind him, he moved to Madison where he attended the University of Wisconsin. Upon graduation, he accepted a position as principal of the Valders school system in September, 1924, and he again taught and coached.
Wide Interests
Mr. Bray was interested in youth activities and athletics. He played football, basketball and baseball at Platteville and won the selection as halfback on the All-State College team in his senior year. Led by him, his teams won eight championships in the Eastern Wisconsin Conference in basketball.
Numbered among his interests were many educational and civic groups. He held memberships in the American Association of School Administrators, Wisconsin Association of Secondary School Principals, the Wisconsin Association of Secondary District Administrators and the Manitowoc County Teachers Assn., the last of which he served twice as president.
At Valders he was a member of the American Legion and acted as post commander and post adjutant. He was a past president of the Valders Lions Club and was active in Christmas Seal campaigns in the Valders area for 27 years, managing area sales.
WIAA Advisor
His other interests in civic affairs included his membership on the Memorial Park Board and his connection with the Valders Fire Department as a former officer. He represented the Eastern Wisconsin Conference as its president on two occasions.
For seven years he served on the advisory council of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Assn. He was also a member of the Quarter Century Club of Wisconsin Educators.
Surviving him are his wife, four sons, Gene of Green Bay, Joseph of Livingston, Grant County, and Lawrence and John of Sheboygan, a daughter, Mrs. John (Darlene) Oseczanek of Green Bay and 20 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at Farley Funeral Home, Valders, and at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, Clarks Mills, the Rev. Henry Arens officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call after 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, where the Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. by members of the parish.
