Charles D. Thoelecke was the youngest child of Amanda Denker and Herman Thoelecke. In March 1919, both of his parents passed away of influenza within six days of each other.
Charles was adopted by Michigan natives living in North Platte. They were Daniel and Irene Valerius. He was their only child, and they raised him as their own.
Charles' aunt, school teacher and principal, Bertha Thoelecke, kept in touch with Charles and his adoptive parents.
Charles' siblings were Herman, Lester, Roy and Arthur. Herman was adopted by a couple in Arthur, Nebraska. They allowed him to keep his surname and keep in touch with his family. Herman passed away when he was in high school and is buried with his birth parents in North Platte. Roy was raised by his uncle, Otto Thoelecke. Lester and Arthur were sent to an orphanage in Lincoln, Nebraska. Lester joined the Navy but passed away young of meningitis. Arthur stayed single. He was a shoe salesman in Las Vegas, Nevada.
