Douglas George Brennan, age 68, of Valders, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Thursday afternoon, March 18, 2004.

Doug was born on Nov. 13, 1935, in Manitowoc, son of the late Harold C. and Ruth A. Keenan Brennan. He graduated from Valders High School with the Class of 1954. On June 2, 1956, he married his first and only love, Miss Alice Enders, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Clarks Mills.

Doug started his career working for his father at Valders Lime & Stone Company. In 1970 he became president of the corporation. Upon Doug's semi-retirement in 1991, he became a sales representative for Biesanz Stone Co. of Winona, Minn. In addition to Biesanz Stone Co., in 1992 Doug became a consultant for Western Lime Corporation of West Bend, and in 1999 a sales representative for AG&M Granite of Austin, Texas, until his illness forced him to resign his positions. He owned and operated the former Brennan's Mobil, which is now Weber's Amoco, and the properties that became the following businesses in Valders: Valders' Buses, Dave Mahlik Insurance, R&J Laundry and Scott's Stuff. He also owned and operated Manitowoc Bottling Company. He built the first four-plex apartment buildings in both Valders and Whitelaw in addition to the first duplex in Valders. Doug was past president of the Valders Lions Club and a member of the Village Board for many years. He was a shareholder in the Valders Improvement Corporation and a member of the Valders Housing Corporation. He served on the board of directors for TDS Telecom. Doug was also a member of the Building Stone Institute and the Associated Stone Institute. He was awarded Small Business Man of the Year by the Manitowoc Jaycees. Doug was an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and part of the Holy Name Society.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Brennan and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Louis and Ottilia Enders.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Clarks Mills with burial to follow at St. Mary's Catholic Church Cemetery, Clarks Mills.

Doug cherished his time with Alice and family at their cottage on Cedar Lake and condo in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. He loved spending time in his work shed and was an avid Packer fan. His greatest joy came from spending time with his children and grandchildren and being able to attend their many activities. He will be deeply missed. From time to time we encounter an individual unique in his or her approach to life. Specifically, those who through their efforts seem to, in their own way make good things happen in their sphere of influence. We think you are one of those people; We applaud you and your efforts. :' The Christianson & Deja Funeral Home and Cremation Care Center, Valders, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
