German economist, sociologist and political scientist. Born Karl Emil Maximilian Weber in Erfurt, Germany, he believed that bureaucracy was the most important aspect of society and was the first to formalize the field of public administration. His best known work is "The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism" (1904), which was a major influence on economic and sociological theory. Considered to be the founder of modern sociology. Helped to draft the constitution for the Weimar Republic in 1919. Died in Munich, Germany, of pneumonia.
