Subject of a Book. She and her husband received recognition after being the subjects of the best-selling 1977 book "The Amityville Horror" by Jay Anson. The book, which was sold as a true experience, is based on paranormal claims of the Lutz family. The book was adapted into a series of at least a dozen films, starting in 1979. The Lutz sold the rights to the story to Anson. In the 21st century, the book is classified as a horror novel. In December of 1975, the Lutz family, which included her, her husband George and three children, purchase a Colonial Dutch home for a deal of around $80,000 in the suburb of Amityville on Long Island. The Lutz couple knew the house had a history as one year earlier, Ronald DeFeo, Jr. had murdered his parents and four siblings in the house. DeFeo plead not guilty by means of insanity but was found guilty and died in 2021 while serving six life sentences in prison. According to the Lutz family, they began to hear doors slamming, flickering lights, a smell odor of sweet cheap perfume, the sensation being embraced from behind, slime oozing from the walls, hearing a marching band at 3:15 AM, and a red-eyed demonic pig at the window. The family vacated the "haunted house" after 28 days leaving all the belongings including the food in the refrigerator. A yard sale was done some time later. Although many believe the ordeal was a hoax, the Lutzes never retracted their horror story. To allay the harassing of horror fans, the house was given a new address and has been sold at least four times since the Lutzes with no one having any of their paranormal experiences. Prior to moving to Amityville, she had been married and divorced before and had three children with her first husband and two daughters with George. After relocating to California, she and her husband divorced in 1988. Wheelchair bounded for two years, she died from a chronic respiratory disease, and two years later, her ex-husband died from a heart attack in 2006. Both were under the age of sixty.
