U.S. Senator. He studied law, graduated from Transylvania University Kentucky, in 1835 and opened a law practice in St. Louis, Missouri. After serving in the Black Hawk War, he was a member of the St. Louis board of aldermen in 1838 and was a member Missouri State House of Representatives, (1840-41, 54-55). He was Commissioner of Indian Affairs, (1867-68), St. Louis City Council, in 1872 and president St. Louis Iron Mountain Railway. In 1873, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate and served until his death at age 64.
