He was born August 27, 1921, in the town of Meeme, the oldest of 13 children born to the late Frank and Amanda (Rabe) Karstaedt. Elmer attended Mineral Springs Grade School.
On September 28, 1946, he married Verona Beck at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Sheboygan Falls.
In his younger years, Elmer farmed. Later on he worked in construction as a carpenter.
Elmer was an avid hunter and fisherman, especially sturgeon spearing.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Verona; three brothers, Ralph (Delores) Karstaedt of Kiel; Roger (Caroline) Karstaedt of Crossville, TN; and Larry Karstaedt of Phoenix, AZ; six sisters, Bernice Scharenbroch of School Hill; Henrieta Marchiando of Sheboygan; Agnes (Vernon) Vogel of Kiel; Julieanne Hickmann of Kiel; Virginia (Norbert) Herbst of Statesville, NC; and Marjean (Glenroy) Schmitz of New Holstein; his brother-in-law, Victor Schanke of New Holstein; his sister-in-law, Pat Karstaedt of New Holstein. He is further survived by Verona's family, many nieces, and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his brother, Wilbert "Wimpy" Karstaedt; and two sisters, Carolyn Zimmermann and Alyce Schanke.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 14, 2012, at the Sippel Funeral Home, 2618 Altona Avenue in New Holstein. Rev. John Schenck and Vicor Azor Cigelske will officiate. Burial will be in the Eaton Union Cemetery in the Town of Eaton.
