Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He began his Civil War service in the 14th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, serving as a Captain. He was then promoted first to Major of the 7th Illinois Volunteer Cavalry, then to Colonel and commander of the 129th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 16, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services during the campaigns in Georgia and the Carolinas, and for distinguished services at the battle of Smith's Farm, North Carolina".
