S.L. was the son of Silas Parks and Parilee (Lewis) Dobbs. He married first to Laura Malinda Clayton, she died Sept.6, 1885; together they had Hoyt McWhorter, Zoe Malinda, Della, and Maude. He married second to Mary Clementine Newman on May 8, 1888. SL attended the Wills Valley Institute at Portersville, near Collinsville. He received his honorary degree from Southern University in 1898. Dr. Dobbs was a Methodist Minister for 66 years. He was also the founder of Flat Rock School for under privileged boys. His funeral was held at McCoy Church in Birmingham.
