Character Actor. He began his career in 1915 in the film "When We Were Twenty-One." But he is best remembered as General Sternwood in classic film noir "The Big Sleep" (1946), which was his last film. He also appeared in "Crime and Punishment" (1936), "Remember the Night" (1940), "Edison, the Man" (1940), "Untamed" (1940), "The Son of Montecristo" (1940), "The Devil and Miss Jones" (1941), "Random Harvest" (1942), "The Adventures of Mark Twain" (1944) and "Dragonwyck" (1946).
