Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. A college student at the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted on August 21, 1861 and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in Company A, Forty-first Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Promoted through the ranks to Major, he lost his right arm at Shiloh, and was wounded at Stone River, December 31, 1862. For his gallantry he was brevetted Brigadier General of U. S. Volunteers on March 13, 1865. On July 28, 1866, he entered the Regular Army as Captain in the Forty-fifth Infantry, received the brevet of Major on March 2, 1867 and retired on December 15, 1870. After his retirement he settled in St. Mary's parish, Louisiana, where he purchased a plantation, practiced law, was connected with the Freedmen's Bureau and appointed superintendent of public education. On March 4, 1871, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-second Congress and served until is death.
