In 1892, along with his brothers William and Joseph, Hancock purchased Catalina Island for the sum of $128,740. In 1915, following a fire that burned a quarter of Avalon, the Bannings sold the island to William Wrigley, Jr., of Wrigley gum fame. Hancock was married to Anne Banning, founder of the Assistance League of Southern California.
