The Prisoner
William Hinkle was a man about 32 years of age.

He was convicted of murder in the first degree of his wife Nancy Eby and sentenced to be hanged.

His was the first hanging in Appanoose County before a crowd of more than 15,000 people near the town of Orleans. The Ottumwa Courier called it the largest gathering for any event west of the Mississippi.

Profession
I solemly profess before God and all this crowd assembled to witness my death that I am innocent of the death of my wife. I never poisoned her. My life is sworn away
falsley and from that decision of all men I appeal the judgement seat of Almighty God who shall bring to life all hidden things. I now repent of all the sins I am guilty of before God. I appeal to Jesus Christ My Saviour, for the remission of my sins. God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever beleivith in him shall not perish but have everlasting life. I die in peace with my God and all mankind. Unto they hand O God I commit my spirit. I know Ed Grinstead is the cause of my death. He swore lies willfully and knowingly against me. Signed Will Hinkle

When the trap fell, his weight broke the rope and the hanging had to be repeated with a stronger rope.

He was the father of William J. Hinkle, Ephraim Daniel Hinkle, and Nancy Jane Hinkle. They were raised by their great aunt Regena Hinkle Fisk.

Gravesite Details

There is some doubt as to his burial place. It could be around Orleans where he died.
