Danish Monarch. She was the daughter of Landgraf Wilhelm von Hessen-Kassel and Princess Charlotte of Denmark - a grand-daughter of King Frederik V. She married in 1842 to Prince Christian von Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, who in 1853 was appointed heir to the throne after the childless King Frederik VII. Louise was a royal matchmaker, feared by the German chancellor Otto von Bismarck, who thought she was conspiring against Prussia when she was gathering her extended European family of Kings and Emperors for summer holidays at the Palace of Fredensborg. She gave birth to 6 children: Frederik VIII of Denmark, Queen Alexandra of Great Britain, King George I of Greece, Empress Maria Feodorovna (Dagmar) of Russia, Duchess Thyra of Cumberland, married to the dethroned Crown Prince Ernst August of Hannover and Prince Valdemar of Denmark, married to Marie of the royal House of Orléans in France.
