Wm. A Larned was a seven time US Tennis Champion who held the US singles title in 1901-02, and 1907-1911. Larned played on six American Davis Cup Teams. He fought with Col. Roosevelt in the battle of San Juan Hill in 1898. He took up aviation as a civilian and upon American entrance into WW I, was commissioned a Major in the US Army Air Service. He served in England and France and was promoted to Lt. Col. during the war. In business, William was a member of the NY Stock Exchange and a Real Estate developer. He opened Carvel Hall hotel in Annapolis Maryland in 1902. This hotel incorporated the 18th century residence of William Paca, signer of the Declaration of Independence, which Larned had purchased the previous year from the Richard Swann estate.
