Royal Pet. At the age if six weeks the greyhound puppy was adopted by Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha and named after the Greek goddess of the Dawn. The predominantly black dog with white on her face, chest, feet and the tip of her tail quickly became his faithful companion, showering him with loyalty and love. She was by his side when he wed Queen Victoria in 1840. That same year, Edmund Cotterill was commissioned to design a model of her. Her likeness also appeared on paperweights and inkstands. In 1841, Sir Edwin Landseer painted a portrait of her and it is still part of the Royal collection at Windsor Castle. The greyhound passed away at the age of eleven and was buried on the Slopes of Windsor. In 1845, a life-size statue was mounted on a red granite pedestal and placed on the Slopes of Windsor by her grave where it is still guarding her final resting place today.
