Mr. Charles McCurdy Mathias, Sr., age 80, attorney and civic leader, died at his home on Court Square, Frederick. He had been ill for several weeks, but until that time had been active in his office. He died of cancer.
He was born in Baltimore, and lived there for ten years, then the family returned to Frederick County in 1893. He attended public schools in Frederick County and the Marston's University School in Baltimore.
He entered the practice of law in 1911, after he graduated from the University of Maryland Law School, and Johns Hopkins University, where he received an A.B. degree in 1908.
He was active in the Republican party and was widely known as a veteran state party leader.
Mr. Mathias's law partners at the time of his death were his son, Congressman Charles McCurdy Mathias Jr., and his son-in-law, Glenn C. Michel. The firm was joined by an associate, Miss Cleopatra Campbell, a recent graduate, on August 1st.
He was the son of the late State Senator John P.T. Mathias and Mrs. Mathias (formerly Miss Elizabeth Agnes McCurdy, of West Virginia). From his mother, he inherited the McCurdy family farm near Charles Town which has been in the family over a century and a half.
Funeral services to be held at All Saints Episcopal Church on Thursday with the Rev. Maurice D. Ashbury officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
