Ballerina. The daughter of Russian Jewish immigrant parents, Kaye began to study dance at the age of five. After continuing ballet classes at the Metropolitan Opera, she moved into its corps de ballet. By 1936, she was a member of the American Ballet Theatre. She also worked with the Radio City Music Hall and with several Broadway productions. Her interpretation in the role of "Hagar" in "Pillar of Fire" garnered her significant praise and raised her status to one of prima ballerina. She went onto work with choreographers such as Jerome Robbins, Kenneth MacMillan and George Balanchine. She also served as associate artistic director of the American Ballet Theatre from 1977 to 1983. Married three times, her last was to Herbert Ross in 1959. Retired from dancing in 1961, Kaye assisted Ross on many films, notable "Goodbye , Mr. Chips" in 1969, "Funny Lady" and "The Sunshine Boys" both in 1975. She served as a co-producer on the films "The Turning Point," in 1977, "Nijinky" in 1980 and "The Secret of My Success" in 1987. Her dramatic skill in dance and choreography earned her the moniker the "Duse of the Dance." Kaye died from cancer.
