**Inscription on tombstone: "Missionary to the Creek Indians, Tullahasse Mission, IT. 1849-1881.

Rev. William Schenck Robertson graduated in 1843 from Union College, Schenectady, NY; he then took 2/3 of a medical course but decided that teaching was the profession that he liked best. He spent the rest of his life doing what he loved best--teaching; after several years of teaching in academies in NY state, he offered his service to the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions and was assigned to the new mission of Tullahassee among the Creek Indians in IT.

William married on 16 Apr 1850 at Park Hill, Cherokee Nation, IT, Ann Eliza Worcester, daughter of the Rev. Samuel Austin Worcester who worked with the Cherokee Indians; they had 4 children: Ann Augusta b. 9 Oct 1851 who married John H. Craig (who died) and then Judge Napoleon Bonaparte Moore (Creek), click on: Grace L. Robertson Merriman; Alice Mary Robertson (famous Oklahoman and US Rep from OK) *see: Alice Robertson; and Samuel Worcester Robertson.

At the time of the Civil War, Tullahassee Mission was abandoned and the missionary families, including the Robertsons fled to the North; they arrived in Rollo, MO.

The Robertsons continued their teaching; William conducted a private school of young men in Matton, IL; in 1859, he started a Presbyterian seminary for young girls at Matton. He and his family moved back to the Tullahassee Mission in the Creek Nation where the first paper published was "Our Monthy" issued from there. William was editor, Ann was the principal contributor and their son, Samuel Worcester Robertson, chief printer.

In 1800, Tullahassee was burned, and the laundry building and work shops and wagon shed were used to house 20 boys. A new mission needed to be built and Alice Robertson went east to raise funds for the new mission named "Nuyaka" which was opened in 1885.
