Keys, Margaret Haney Died at the age of 97 on Dec. 3, 2006 at home in Minneapolis. She is survived by daughter, Carrie D'Andrea (Julian) of Bloomington, MN; son, Dr. Henry Keys (Marjorie) of Voorheesville, NY; son-in-law, Harvey McLain of Minneapolis; 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 65 years, Ancel Keys; youngest daughter, Martha Keys, and parents, Dr. Claude and Elsie Foulke Haney. Born on 12/2/1909 and raised in Duluth, MN, she graduated from Wells College, Aurora, NY with a degree in chemistry and later taught chemistry there. She met her husband while working as a research chemist at the Mayo Clinic and married in 1939. An intelligent and talented woman, she led a full life with family, travel and had an active role in her husband's amazing career, contributing with her research and organizational skills. She was an excellent cook and co-authored 3 cookbooks with Ancel, the first one, Eat Well and Stay Well, was a best seller. All focused on the health benefits of low fat and Mediterranean diets. She juggled frequent international dinner guests in their Lake Owasso home along with the demands of raising 3 children and growing flowers and vegetables. She had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed music, dogs, sports, gardening, flowers and fires in the fireplace. Like her mother and daughters, she was very creative with needle arts. She wrote daily journals for more than 65 years recording mundane, family and historic events worldwide. After retirement, they lived in southern Italy, and continued with research and writing projects well into their nineties. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to The Ancel Keys Symposium Fund, Minnesota Medical Foundation, 200 Oak Street (Ste 300) Minneapolis, MN 55455, or the Keys Family Prize and Scholarship Fund, Albany Medical Center Foundation, 43 New Scotland Ave. Albany, NY 12208. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 16, 2006 at 11:00 AM, with visitation one hour prior to the service at: Washburn-McReavy Edina Chapel 952-920-3996 West 50th St. & Hwy. 100
