Danish Monarch. She received notoriety in 1525 when she married Duke Christian of Schleswig-Holstein, who ascended to the Danish and Norwegian throne as King Christian III. On August 12, 1537, she rode on a white horse beside her husband at their coronation. She was the daughter of Duke Magnus of Sachsen-Lauenburt and his wife, Katharina von Braunschweig-Wolfenbuttel and schooled in a German state. She had to learn the Danish language after her marriage but continued to use German in her writings and at other times. Her dowry was spent on improvements at the Castle Sonderburg and the Castle Koldinghus, which became her residence as a Dowager Queen. She was the mother of five children with one being the future king, Fredrick II. While king, her son accused her of treason in 1567 and exiled her to Castle Sonderburg until her death four years later. She had a strong, passionate personality; supported peace between neighboring countries; was very beautiful and proud of her dignity; and often informally gave her opinion in state affairs, which led to stress between her and her son, the King.
