Born in Burkeville, Alabama, she was the youngest of 16 Siblings. Mrs. Harris completed high school at Fairfield Industrial High, received a bachelor of science Degree from Tuskegee institute[ now Tuskegee University,] and a Master of Ark Degree for the school of Education, New York University. She taught typing and short hand and was the Director of Financial Aid at Booker T. Washington Business College.
Mrs. Harris was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. The Birmingham Chapter of the Girl Friends, Inc. Club Les Elite, The Vagabond's Club and the Birmingham Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc., First Congregational Christian Church was her spiritual home where she served as Treasurer and Chairperson of the Council for many years.
Mrs. Harris is preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Dr. Samuel E. Harris. She leaves to Cherish her memory; three daughters, Tamara Harris Johnson, Esq. of Birmingham, Al, Terea D. Harris, M.D. of Southfield, MI; and Tollese Harris Bankett, M.D. of La Plata, MD;.
Her granddaughters, Erica Johnson, M.D. of Louisville, KY., Ashley Johnson, J.D. and Leah Bankett of La Plata, M.D. and Shayla Jones of Detroit, M.I.; her grandsons, Jared and Jordan Bankett of La Plata, M.D. and Samuel Jones of Detroit, M.I; a future grandson-in-Law, Dr. Joel Parker of Avon, IN; A sisters-in-Law Mrs. Edna M. Gardner of Birmingham, Al. Mrs. Mary Gardner of Lowndes County, Al. and Mrs. Maxine Gardner of Montgomery, Al.
Visitation will be held Sunday, August 5,2012 from 10:00 A.M. until 4:00 P.M. at Smith & Gaston Southside Chapel. funeral services will be held Monday, August 6, 2012 at 1:00 P.M. Smith& Gaston south side Chapel. With interment in Elmwood Cemetery.
