He was buried at sea by the Navy (Lat. 24° 27' N, Long. 141° 19' E). There is also a marker for him in his hometown in NJ. He was posthumously awarded a Purple Heart.

He enlisted in the US Navy in 1932, and was a Chief Petty Officer and Acting Pay Clerk when he died.

He served on the USS Portland, Cushing, Bear, Ludlow, and San Jacinto. He died while on the USS Terry, which was struck by enemy fire off the coast of Iwo Jima, and was buried later the same day.

He married Ina Frizzell on Jan. 9, 1943, in Brookline, MA.
