Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. He was a Captain in the US Army serving (1855-60) and a veteran of the Mexican American War. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he turned his alliance to the Confederate cause and was commissioned a Major in Confederate Infantry. He Became Colonel of the 1st South Carolina Infantry Regiment in July 1861 and was in command of the 5th South Carolina Cavalry on July 28, 1863. Promoted Brigadier General on August 22, 1864, he was in command of a brigade under General Wade Hampton. During the Siege of Petersburg, leading his men at the Battle of Vaughan Road, Brigadier General Dunovant was mortally shot and killed.
