Swedish Diplomat. A diplomat in Hungary during World War II, he made arrangements for safe houses, permits and passports for the Jews in Nazi-occupied Hungary and saved many thousands of lives. After the Soviet "liberation" of Budapest, he was taken into custody by the Russians and there is no verifiable evidence that he was ever seen alive again. It seems clear that he was taken to Moscow. Some say he died in hospital there of pneumonia in 1947 or 1948; some say he was executed on arrival; others claim to have met him alive in Soviet labour camps (the 'gulag') in the 1950s or as late as the 1960s. His memorial appropriately shows him half-hidden.
