Scientist. Born in Buda, Hungry, he was a physicist professor whose theoretical work was significant in studying capillary action and gravity. From 1878, he led the Institute of Experimental Physics at the Budapest University of Sciences, where he established the identity of gravitational and inert masses. While researching the changes of gravitation, he invented the torsion balance in 1891, a human-sized measuring device. For his gravity measurements contributions, he received the Benecke prize in Göttinga in 1909. Representatives of the international scientific world regard him even today as the master of classical physics.
