Gretchen Sammis, 86, of Cimarron, passed away Tuesday, Aug.14, 2012, in the same bed she was born in on Oct. 12, 1925. Gretchen was the daughter of Fred Sammis and Margaret Chase Rupert. Gretchen was raised in Cimarron, attended school at the Colorado Women's College, graduated from the University of New Mexico in 1952 and then went on to get her Masters of Science and Physical Education at CU:
Gretchen was a dedicated school teacher for 26 years. She was an advocate for women in sports, National Director of the Soil and Water Conservation, National Cowgirl Hall of Fame, was on the REA Board and she was voted New Mexico Cattleman in 2007.
Gretchen is survived by Ruby Gobble, ranch foreman and companion for 49 years; her sister Joan Bloomenshine and niece Taffy Pearson.
