"The death of James Samuel Campbell, a resident of Cooperstown for many years, occurred on January 5 a his home, 9 South Lake Avenue, Albany. His age was 81. Mr. Campbell was born in Cherry Valley. In 1902 he came to Cooperstown and was associated with the Arnold and Cooke law offices until he formed a law partnership with the late Judge Adrian A. Pierson in 1911. In 1918, Mr. Campbell received an appointment as Clerk of the U. S. District Court in Cristobal, Canal Zone. While there he was an organizer and officer of the Cristobal Union Church, and a member of the Board of the Army and Navy YMCA in Colon. At his retirement in 1936, Mr. Campbell returned to Cooperstown and lived at 6 Elk Street ... In 1910, Mr. Campbell married Marion Adele Jennings of Summit, N. J., a sister-in-law of the Rev. Sidney S. Conger, for many years pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of this village. They made their home at 14 Main Street until moving to the Canal Zone. Mr. Campbell is survived by his wife; three sons, James Samuel Campbell, Jr., Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of California in Berkeley; Dr. Crawford J. Campbell, head of the department of orthopedic surgery at Albany Hospital; and Colin D. Campbell, economist with the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System in Washington, D. C.; a daughter, Mrs. Marion Campbell Martin, formerly assistant professor of nursing at the Union University School of Nursing, now of Ames, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Florence Higgins of Roseboom; and a brother, Hon. Edwin R. Campbell of Schenevus, former Surrogate of Otsego County. Funeral services were held from his late residence in Albany on Sunday, and interment will be in Cherry Valley Cemetery."
