Ruth spent her early years in Speermore, Oklahoma, attending school at Union Center Country School. She moved with her parents to Laverne, Oklahoma in 1936, where she met Ralph Henry Koch and married in 1938. To this union was born two sons, Gary D. and Hugh Roger "Bud".

Seeking a new direction she attended Floral Design studies in Denver, Colorado, after graduation she returned to Dodge City and began her career. She later moved back to Laverne to be closer to her parents and opened her own floral shop the Ponderosa.
